The Popsicle Playdate

June 9, 2024 · In: Playdates

Kickoff summer with a popsicle playdate! The perfect way to cool down and relax. I’ve been seeing so many popsicle/ice cream themed products lately so I figure why not make a playdate out of it. What really sold me on the idea was the big ice cream truck art kit from Target. It’s basically a ginormous 3D coloring sheet that also serves as a fort. I have a feeling this will keep kids entertained for awhile. Add some popsicles to the mix and you’ll have a fun day in the sun.

If you’ve been wanting to get to know your neighbors better, this is the perfect playdate to do just that. Easy entertainment for the kids and a cheap simple snack to go with it. No need to clean inside your house as you can set everything up outside and enjoy the sunshine. We love a low key playdate! Here’s some ideas on how to host –

Activities

Coloring Ice Cream Truck

The first activity is the Target coloring ice cream truck. I recommend setting up the truck before friends arrive. Building anything with kids around can get a little stressful. Once constructed, setout some crayons, markers, color pencils or if you’re brave…paint. Next grab an end table or kids table to put the coloring utensils on. That’s it. That’s all the setup for this activity. Let the kids color the truck and play inside it. If you want to really go all out you can setup some pretend ice cream cones and popsicles. This 60 piece set from Target comes with different ways to play which would pair well with the ice cream truck and it’s only $25.

Simple Coloring Sheet

If you haven’t noticed, I’m a sucker for a coloring sheet. They are so easy to make and double up as decor. Not that this playdate needs more coloring activities but if you have younger kids that may not be into coloring the truck you can print off a few of our Popsicle Playdate coloring sheets for them to scribble on. Snacks

Hydrating Popsicle Recipe

If your kid is anything like mine they love to eat popsicles. One summer when it was 100+ degrees out I kept trying to get my son to drink water but instead all he wanted were popsicles. Shocking I know. Then it dawned on me, why don’t I just make a batch of kids Liquid IV (to give the water some flavor) and freeze it into popsicles!?! If you’re not familiar, Liquid IV is a powder electrolyte drink that you mix in water for faster more efficient water intake/hydration. They now have several kids flavors including fruit punch, cotton candy, grape and a few more. Here is a link to the product. Usually you can find this at Target as well. My son thinks these are your typical popsicles and always wants more than one. I don’t feel bad when he has two…or three in one day. Gotta stay hydrated!

Popsicle and Ice Cream Accessories

Although the Liquid IV popsicles are great there is nothing wrong with store bought! We love a classic Otter Pop except for the fact your hands get pretty cold holding it. Fear not, Amazon saves the day with a popsicle sleeve. My son loves these as he tends to take his time with Otter Pops. Another great find is the ice cream stick holder. It catches all the melting ice cream preventing a sticky mess.

Lastly, you can’t forget about the babies! These teethers with the additional ice mold is a game changer. I used to melt down ice or awkwardly force fruit in the teethers but now these mold provide you with the perfect size fit. Fill it with ice and a squirt of lemon or orange juice or fill it with fruits and veggies. This article has some great healthy recipes. Now your baby can enjoy a frozen treat with the big kids!

Send the kids out in the yard to gather leafs or go on a neighborhood walk. Once you have enough leaves of various shapes, sizes and colors head back to the house to assemble. Start by making a face out of construction paper and googly eyes, glue the face on a clothespin and clasped your favorite leaves to the pin.

Introducing: Trader Joe’s Mac-N-Cheese in a mini crockpot 🧀

I’m making this for 15 toddlers so they don’t need much. I buy 3 of the frozen Mac-n-cheese boxes, partially heat them in a microwave (for 3min), dump in a mini crockpot and plug in the crockpot at school. That’s it! Like I said, quick and easy 🙌🏼
